Journal of Physiology, 599: 2085-2102. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1113/JP280857 https://physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/JP280857 The neuronal circuit and the glial circuit in the brain can be considered as loosely coupled parallel network of networks. The role of the added layer of signals coded in the glial activity has been enigmatic. Here, we show that glial cells in the cerebellum react to excitatory transmitter glutamate released from synapses of neurons. The glial cells then release additional glutamate in return. Therefore, these glial cells effectively function as excitatory signal amplifiers. The additional glutamate released from glial cells efficiently activate metabotropic glutamate receptors on Purkinje neuron, which is known to be essential for cerebellar motor learning. The amount of feedforward excitation is controlled by the intracellular pH of the glia cells. Therefore, whether the same experience retain as memory or not may depend on the state of the glial cell at the time of the learning. These data show that the state of glial cells have a potential for having direct and fundamental consequences on the information processing in the brain. @JPhysiol, @TohokuU_Lifesci, @tohoku_univ, @GDecoding, #JPhysiol, #Astrocyte, #Synapse, #YoungGlia Press releases Tohoku University (Japanese) http://www.tohoku.ac.jp/japanese/2021/02/press20210217-01-glial.html Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University (Japanese) https://www.lifesci.tohoku.ac.jp/research/results/detail---id-49856.html Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University (Japanese) https://www.med.tohoku.ac.jp/news/4600.html 2021.02.17 プレスリリース 東北大学 本部 2021.02.17 プレスリリース 東北大学 生命科学研究科 2021.02.17 プレスリリース 東北大学 医学系研究科 2021.02.17 東北大学 本部 twitter 2021.02.17 東北大学 生命科学研究科 twitter 2021.02.17 東北大学 医学系研究科 twitter 2021.02.17 プレスリリース 日本経済新聞 2021.02.18 TECH+ マイナビ 2021.02.18 excite ニュース 2021.02.19 Neuro Global twitter 2021.02.24 Tohoku University Research News 2021.02.24 Tohoku University Grad Sch Life Sci Research 2021.02.24 Tohoku University English twitter 2021.02.24 Tohoku University Life Sciencss E-twitter 2021.02.24 Tohoku University English facebook 2021.02.24 Tohoku University English LinkedIn 2021.02.24 Mirage News 2021.02.24 AlphaGalileo 2021.02.24 Asia Research News 2021.02.24 Technology Networks 2021.02.24 MedicalXpress 2021.02.24 Bioengineer.org 2021.02.24 ScienMag 2021.02.25 The Medical News 2021.02.25 AZO Life Sciences 2021.02.25 Infosurhoy 2021.02.25 Recommended in Faculty Opinions 2021.02.26 At one months, Altmetric Score = 116 13 News, 25 Tweeters 98th percentile of all research outputs tracked (17,069,711) #6 out of 111 outputs (from similar age from J Physiol)
